The Crucial States of Oman

Britain assumed its role in the Gulf because you had a number of small tribal leaders whose checks were recognized by the British as speaking for that tribe and that area of the Gulf. And imposed these treaties upon them so there would be no attacks by sea of one ruler for another ruler. As a consequence of that, they legitimized them. Now Oman didn't need to be legitimized. There wasn't really much economic incentive for Britain in Oman, but it was strategic. They assumed this role of influence in order to make sure that no threat to the empire, no threat to shipping should come from Oman. That's why they backed the sole pawns against the Amams.
