What's the Cabinet Office's Role?
There's a small-ish team in the Cabinet Office that leads on public bodies policy. They set the strategy if you like and then hold departments to account for what they're doing, keeping note of the numbers. For the last few years there hasn't been much interest in getting rid of public bodies. The repatriation of post-Brexit functions is more about building them. Sue Gray used to be responsible for the public bodies team as well. Would she think energy absorbed wasn't worth the time spent? It's a good question.
