T4 is produced and that is then converted to T3, which is the most active hormone. Most of that conversion happens via these enzymes called diotinases - they are located in the periphery so not near thyroid gland. The body needs selenium, magnesium, iron, zinc, B vitamin, vitamin C, vitamin D for it to work properly. If we don't have enough nutrients or if there are too many factors impeding its production, hypothyroidism can manifest itself as symptoms such as weight loss & fatigue.
