I think what are try nd do in the book is to show how the way in which we usually primarily engage with a question of empire. The kind of, you know, massacre of populations or extracting of wealth from different territory across the world relied upon a certain kind of racial hierarchy. We talk about empire and race, and i try and relate that back to the material basis. Not to say that that isn't important, but that that importance is part of this process of wealth accumulation. I think we need to remember, even those of us who are committed towards undoing the kind of racial legacy of empire, to remember that that is not the reason why people will have got on boats
