The Ottoman Empire in Its Heyday
The Ottoman Empire is sometimes casually listed as one of those old empires that fell in World War I. But it actually survived even through the First World War, before being finally overthrown and replaced with the secular Turkish Republic in the 1920s. At its height the empire controlled massive provinces, including all of the critical juncture points of Europe, Asia and Africa. In Europe, they occupied the whole Balkan Peninsula, from the regions we now know as Romania and Hungary in the north, down to Greece and the Aegean islands. They also dominated various tributary states around the Black Sea, including the Tatar Khanate of the Crimea. The site of Constantinople was a critical choke point
