The Fishing Boat Crisis in Somalia
Somali fishermen used to defend their coastline against foreign boats. But when a fishing boat got too close, they would get on board and demand payment. The idea behind this was as some kind of compensation for stolen fish. Soon the number of attacks started to increase, and ransoms were paid. This led to an investment market where people could invest in pirate expeditions. It became a pretty big business with pirates making huge amounts of money. A ransom has now been set at 13.5 million dollars by modern-day pirates.
