To force down means you're reluctant to eat because you don't feel well, but you know you have to. To gobble is the sort of noise that farmhouse birds make, like turkeys or chickens or ducks or geese,. So kids love to gobble the food - they eat it very quickly and hardly stop for air. Also related to drink is the word to guzzle: to drink a lot and very quickly.
