The Role of Race in Affirmative Action
Bocky and Grutter were the two cases that previously governed affirmative action in higher ed. That's been against the law since like 1950 or so when Bocky came out. The court basically said you can't make admissions decisions based on race. But what you can do is use race as a sort of last step in the process plus that you add to it.
