A golden retriever is a very slow to mature. Still puppies really well past one, and they don't really reach maturity until about two or three. It's not worth doing any serious training before they're about five, six months old. And he isn't yet. He'll respond if he wants something, but won't if he doesn't. That will come in about four or five weeks time.
