Diegetic Versus Non-Diegetic Actions in Video Games

Games can be thought of as types of actions that can occur in the playing of a video game. So for instance, if you are playing a game and it's a first person shooter and you're walking down a hallway, in diegetic terms, the player character is walking down the hallway. That is what you would relate to someone. Then non-diegetic actions that the operator may take would be something like pausing the game or opening a menu which halted the narrative progression. Something that you would maybe probably not necessarily talk about in your review of the game to someone else,. unless you're specifically talking about a menu mechanic.
