There is a certain kind of American accent that we can hear in a lot of music. It might not match perfectly with general American or with all American accents. I get the feeling this accent comes from the people who sang the blues and gospel. And my often sounds like Ma-a-a-A, okay, for example. So, first of all, we have dipthongs. Dipthongs are flattened to single vowel sounds,. So, I becomes more like a-a-i-o-e-u-d - which means 'I am'
