CHAPTER

The Yamnaia Horizon

The Amnaia horizon appears first roughly in the area just north of the Caucasus Mountains, between the Black and Caspian Seas. This was the initial homeland as far as we can tell, the place where that fully mobile way of life emerged around 3,400 or 3,500 BC. The really fascinating thing about the Yamnaia horizon was that it scaled. It wasn't tied to a single place - moving was as simple as packing up the tents, getting on horseback and riding to the next patch of pasture. For an ambitious young man looking to move up in the world, it could be like joining a high-risk, high-reward, franchising operation.
