Van Gogh was largely self-taught. He could put all of those together in a way that expressed himself perfectly. And then you look at that self-portrait and you realize he's coming out of this rich soil of the artistic community in Europe. These guys were like musicians that jammed together in a lot of ways. They knew each other. Even if they didn't know each other, they knew... It was as if they virtually knew each other, even though they didn't live at the same time.
