Charles chapin was a voracious reader throughout his life. His first telegram delivery job had been to senator john james engles, who allowed him to borrow books from his library whenever he wanted. The editor finally just gave him a key to his bookcase. Chapin expanded his self driven study by sending away for a course to learn shorthand and taking notes at public lectures that he attended. He also taught himself morse code when he subbed in for the town's regular telegraph operator when he was too intoxicated to do his job.
