CHAPTER

Is There Anisotropy in the Inner Core?

The waves that move through the innermost inner part slow down in a different way. The slowest direction in the outer shell of the inner core is in the equatorial plane. It sounds like there are crystals, sort of needle-like crystals as it were inside here. And they're lined up in different directions. This is one of the hypotheses exactly. One way to explain it is you can have an aggregate of crystals that are preferentially aligned that would produce anisotropy. They would make seismic waves to move differently inDifferent directions.
