The Uncanny and the Unconscious
Even as you know better, some part of you still has fear or anxiety. The uncanny shows the way in which is also hovering between like modernity and pre-modernity. Here's a quote from Paul Vain about how we have certain beliefs that are archaic but they are beliefs. For my part, I hold ghosts to be simple fictions, but I perceive their truth nonetheless. At the very moment I type these pages, I feel the hairs stand up on the back of my neck. One would reassure me more than to learn that ghosts, quote unquote, really exist.
