The History of Xinjiang

In 1871 in the late 1870s the Qing army did actually manage to regain the bulk of Xinjiang with the help of the Russians who supplied them with grain from Siberia. However, at this point the Russian authorities had come to the conclusion that they didn't actually intend to give this Ili Valley back. So collision inevitably resulted and a very foolish piece of Qing diplomacy resulted in the Russians getting even more back than they expected. This outrage the Qing court, an army was dispatched to make war on the Russians in Ili. And for a brief period in 1880, serious conflict seemed likely. The Russians in the end pulled back and they decided that they couldn't afford the financial cost of waging
