There's a misconception that you can self care yourself out of a major depressive disorder or post-traumatic stress disorder. Mental health conditions are neurobiologic and require trained professionals to provide psychotherapy and sometimes medications to help you feel better. Instead of thinking as self care is a tool to treat a specific condition, think of it more like a spot test to see how you're doing. If you know that your daily walk in the park with Fido is your nourishing time, yet you just can't bring yourself to take the dog out, that could be a sign that you need to seek professional help.
