Cognitive Labels of Memory and Attention

Memory is notoriously slippery, just conceptually and in terms of mechanisms. It's not always clear that they're really the same cognitive process we're studying depending on the specific instantiation of memory or attention you're looking at. You can prepare to direct your attention to a specific visual feature, a specific location in space, a specific type of task and those are all going to look very different as well. So I think the cognitive labels of memory and attention are very useful because they are convenient short hands that we all intuitively understand and communicate.
