I think a lot of kids start to give up on themselves and maths around about fifth grade. And then those middle school years are really important, because they're allowed to explore in good ways. So it turns out it is really important to be saying to kids, I know you can do this. Those messages are not given enough by teachers. There's a study that was done where all kids wrote an essay for their teacher - half got feedback from their teacher but the other half read an extra sentence at the bottom which did significantly better next year.
