The first official ghetto was in venice, and that's where the word comes from. The karaite jews are like a sect of jews who do not believe there is an oral law on a par with the written law. There were some egyptian ghettos before the moslems took over. And then there was a ghetto in constantinople during the middle ages. So you have sort of the era of the ghetto, which goes from, you know, basically, like the 14 hundreds to the 17 hundreds or so.
