After the Second World War, farmers were given huge subsidies to grow food. But now they are being forced to use more fertiliser and pesticides than ever before. The result is a soil that has been exhausted by too much nitrogen and phosphates. 'The whole point of rationing - it's not that we're short of food,' says Mr Boulden.
