The Problem With Commitment Devices

I love the spirit of the idea. It is the kind of idea that I hear bandied about around the lunch table with really good economists. But this feels like a program that wouldn't actually work in practice and that would have bigger costs than benefits. And why is that? As much as economists like commitment devices, people in the real world are not eager to sign up to them.
