In the 19 nineties, travelling around latin america and being interested in development. I was asked to identify a subject that would do my sort of master's thesis on. My job was primarily to be the person who said, how much opium is grown in afghanistan? And i always felt, it's so k. You need that quantitiv soof performance measure,. Some sort of indicator of the te scale of the problem. But i want to know, why does a farmer start growing opium poppy for the first time? How are they introduced to it? What is the labour input into this? What is their actual net return?
