I think it was hidden enough that people didn't really know it was there, or what aboutb just by their own neighbors. Straight people sometimes have a hard time figuring out how to behave when they're completely surrounded by lesbians. Even if they had the women around them that they enjoyed being around, there was still all these other people. And at that time, things were rough for lesbians and women.
