Wright's fiction drew on knowledge about the situation of black women. He had interviewed many domestic workers during his time as a communist journalist. As such a worker, he also understood how violence against black women was callously and routinely ignored. Native son emphasizes that bigger gives no thought to bessie after murdering her, but is only concerned that he might get caught for killing mary.
