Rodney King was tasered, kicked, and hit 56 times with solid aluminum batons. The footage of the beating helped spark one of the most intense and violent periods of civil unrest in US history. South Central LA was already an open tinderbox waiting to be lit. And it put police brutality on the national agenda for the first time.
