Just because we can build bigger does not mean that we should. If a tiny self epcaing pad gets the job done, it is presumably no harder to build a hundred more of them than one a hundred times bigger. You could as easily plant that pea on an astroid here at home and tell it to turn that into a thousand giant colony ships. Non microscopic species so rare we don't even know of it yet, probably is not irreplaceably critical to life on some new ward under an alien sun or inside a giant cylinder habitat.
