In 1982, scientists created the first successful genetically engineered organisms. They transferred a gene that encodes antibiotic resistance from one strain of bacteria into another. That was just a huge breakthrough in GMO technology. In 1992, FDA released regulation stating that same sort of criteria would be transferred to food products.
