How Common Was Literacy in the Seventeenth Century?

Reading and writing were taught us separate skils. Literacy has in the ability to read, particularly printed texts, was probably much higher than we would get by measuring what is called signature literacy. There's been some very interesting work done lately that suggests that if they were initialing documents, that probably indicates a pretty high level of ability to read. So at tos kind of aspects of literacy coming across in peeps's diary that i hadn't really had to think about before, and that was really interesting to me.
