The Different Types of Cathedrals
Gothic architecture is more delicate and fine, it looks prettier than the great big hulking masses. I always think of Gothic looking a lot like sort of Elven architecture in Lord of the Rings. It does something very different to Romanesque. The flying buttress essentially brings the thrust outwards and downwards so it disperses thrust. And they allow for that cage-like appearance. If we didn't have them, we would have lower, quite dominant, revolting, great shafts rather than long, thin, wasted, columnar shafts.
