Before the French Revolution, there was a reaction to the enlightenment that in some places manifested itself as a retreat to hardcore tradition and Catholicism. But there was also freaky wild experimentation going on with the mesmerists and all the crazy things that were going on exploring consciousness. The Martin is ism is one facet of that whole thing of an important part of what in France became known as illuminism. And this is conservative in the sense that it's reacting against the free thinking of people like Voltaire, but it's radical in the sense they're daring to delve into mysticism in a very brave way.
