Lewis was in many ways, prescient and prophetic. In the midst of World War II he saw the danger of the totalizing power of the state allied with big business. Lewis is kind of doesn't really go too deep into the economic underpinnings of why some humans suffer and some seem to get through life so easily. The psychology of consumerism didn't seem to be on his horizon.
