HPI 20 - Master of Ceremonies - Jaimini’s Mimamsa-Sutra
History of Philosophy: India, Africana, China
The Purpose of Rituals in Jaimini
The Mimamsa sutra is the longest of the collections to emerge in the age of the sutra. It contains 2745 sutras, compared to for instance only 555 in the Vedanta sutra. Jaimini claims that any action presupposes the presence of desire in the one who performs it. He goes so far as to say that, in cases where a sacrifice loses his interest in the outcome when he is part way through a ritual, he should just stop leaving the ritual incomplete.
