The History of Genetic Counseling

Genetic counseling was started at Sarah Lawrence University outside of New York City. The field, and it's a master's level field, really started in part because administrative officials there were looking for ways to attract women whose children had gone off to school. A battle ensued over who genetic counselors really were. And ultimately the master's level profession, and this spread well beyond Sarah Lawrence to many other schools during the 1970s and 80s, became genetic counselors.
