Ernest Hemingway was attracted to older women in Toronto, Canada. He met Elizabeth Hadley Richardson when she visited the sister of his roommate's family. She would be the first Hemingway wife at 28 years old from St. Louis. The pair had a mental breakdown and he never really wanted to buy anything for her.
