What Happened After President Kennedy's Speech?

Kennedy's speech was the first that the public heard of the crisis, which had already been going on in private for a week. The rate of prayer and confessions immediately and dramatically jumped in american churches. Some accounts indicate that the soviets did not respond by going to a higher alert status to get airplanes in the air. These accounts hold that they just froze in place, presumably out of a desire not to further escalate the situation.
