The Chinese Communist call this phenomenal industrialization a great leap forward. In human terms, this means a 12-hour working day for an incredibly low wage by our standard. But the true state of the nation was hidden, edited out of the visitors' experience. New farming methods introduced as part of the great leap actually caused crops to fail. The reality is that China was unable to feed its toiling population. By 1961, at least 36 million people had been killed by an avoidable famine. While millions were dying of starvation in the Hinterland, the Communist regime stopped at nothing to ensure that the table tennis world championships would be a propaganda triumph.
