The Two Isms of Compatiblism and Determinism

Determinism is the idea that everything that happens is, wait for it, determined. Or if you prefer, everything that can happen does happen. Determinism deepens the problem of your heroics and the train. If determinism is true, how can any one be morally responsible for anything? That brings us to our second ism, compatibleism. This is simply the view that freedom or moral responsibility, or something along these lines, is, after all, compatible with determinism.
