The Role of Violence in American Politics
There is this strong strain in American politics that any violence is fundamentally wrong and spoils the cause. Black abolitionists relied on violence as well according to Kelly Carter Jackson's new book force and freedom. John Brown certainly fits into that in the ways you're describing and I think slave revolts are something that until fairly recently haven't been part of the conversation around anti-slavery movements.
