The iron lung and other negative pressure ventilation devices were certainly a huge step forward in terms of respiratory support. The need for an alternative solution to iron lungs became very apparent during the polio epidemic of the 1950s, where cases were so high that hospitals ran out of iron lungs. When there was an iron lung shortage, some hospitals resorted to performing tracheostomies and then manually ventilating patients. To do this, we have employed about 200 medical students daily.
