I would encourage you, if you have not already, to begin reading as widely as possible away from american literature. There are many more structures for the telling of stories fran the way stories are told here in their most popular forms. And what you want to attack is your unconscious idea the novel or the story or the movie, whatever you unconsciously believe these things to be, is what you will write. So transforming your sense of those then a reading your way towards new ideas for story, for plot, becomes very important.
