Is Ritual Just a Way to Soothe Our Worrying Anxiety?

Is ritual just a way to soothe our feelings of worrying anxiety? That is the idea that has been proposed for over 100 years by anthropologists. And until very recently, nobody had tested it. So me and my colleagues were among the first teams to test that theory. We saw that when people go into the temple to perform those rituals, their heart rate variability increases which shows that they're better able to cope with stress.
