Heraclitus was one of the pre-socratic philosophers. He told us that the stuff applied for the human experience, whether you like it or not, is predicated on the ubiquity of war. There's a good passage in Xenophon's Hellenica when somebody stands up and says, ah, yeah, war, so what? They're breaking out everywhere.
