The Importance of Forgiveness in Atonement
When Jesus is dying on the cross in Mark's gospel, he dies. The second he dies, the curtain in the temple is ripped in half. That is almost always taken to show that Jesus' death now has given people access to God. In Luke, the curtain rips in half before Jesus dies. So it's no longer a sign of atonement because the death hasn't happened yet. Forgiveness is different from atonement.
