The Origins of Skepticism
In the 19th century some serious, testable theories of the unobservable microscopic mechanisms responsible for what we observe became available. In particular, the atomic theory of matter started being developed when people got clear about chemistry. And then that combined with kinetic theory of gases and the kinetic theory of heat led to an overwhelming amount of evidence in favor of the atomic theory. But a few philosophers remained unpersuaded.
