intermediate acting N or NPH works, it does. It's the kind that looks cloudy in the vial. You have to dose it twice a day. The peak of the long or intermediate acting is going to be around a mealtime where you may not take extra insulin because that peak is supposed to be covered by your next food intake. If you vary from that, you're going to have more erratic glucose control.
