The History of Eastern Ukraine

Makhnovist forces controlled most of Eastern Ukraine, an area encompassing seven million people. Peasant and worker councils created a document by popular consent that spelled out civil liberties, rights, and duty in the region. Literacy classes were laid on for illiterate adults, followed by courses in politics and economics given by insurgent peasants and workers who had some grounding in the subjects.
