The Importance of Vitalism in Philosophy

Crawford: There is a technical definition of vitalism in philosophy. He's talking more about, well, thumos, I think, and doing stuff. The unsupervised games and rituals of children in the 19th century was nicely depicted with comic exaggeration. Such patterns of self directed activity persisted into young adulthood in informal associations such as debate societies. Crawford says he still tries to embody those things himself.
