The Moral Imagination

CHAPTER

What Is Crony Capitalism?

Hundreds of thousands of Black men were arrested for things that were hardly crimes or they were misdemeanors. They would be assigned to work in a camp where they'd never saw the sunlight during the entire day. And if a plague came through the camp and people got sick and died, 10, 20, 30% of the entire work camp would simply die. No one cared. It meant nothing to anyone, anyone official that this was happening. You could just go out and arrest more. I mean, this was totally a crony situation in which you were getting very, very cheap labor provided by the state based on a system of injustice.
